Desert Oasis: The Genesis of an Oasis (2D)

A groundwater cross-section lab: rain infiltrates a dune profile, the water table spreads laterally by simplified Darcy diffusion and discharges to evaporation, and an oasis pool with palms takes hold where the table breaches the basin.

This 2D companion turns the desert-oasis scene into a working hydrology model: a dune cross-section holds a diffusing groundwater table that rises with rainfall infiltration and falls to evaporation and lateral discharge, so a pool only appears at the basin once the table has genuinely risen to meet the surface — and palms only take root once the ground there has stayed wet long enough.

⚙ Under the hood

A finite-difference groundwater table diffuses laterally across a fixed dune profile, recharged by infiltrating surface runoff and drained by an evaporation term; vegetation density tracks local water availability over simulated days.
