MOF Open Metal Site Catalysis
Interactive 3D simulation of single-site catalysis at a coordinatively unsaturated metal center inside a metal-organic framework pore: substrates diffuse, bind, react and release, tracked by live turnover frequency.
Metal-organic frameworks used as heterogeneous catalysts often work through a single, well-defined active site: a metal ion left coordinatively unsaturated after activation, exposed at the corner of the framework's secondary building unit. This simulation zooms into one such open metal site inside a MOF pore, surrounded by the periodic node-and-linker lattice, and models substrate molecules diffusing through the cage, binding to the Lewis-acidic metal center, converting to product on a stochastic catalytic clock, and releasing back into the pore. Adjustable substrate concentration, diffusion rate, capture radius and kcat let you move between diffusion-limited and reaction-limited turnover regimes while live readouts track cumulative turnovers, turnover frequency (TOF), and current site occupancy — the same figures of merit used to benchmark real single-site MOF catalysts.
