2D Chemical Bonding: Ionic vs Covalent vs Metallic
Interactive 2D canvas chemical-bonding simulator: pick any two elements, watch the electronegativity difference get computed live, and see the resulting bond — ionic electron transfer, polar or nonpolar covalent electron sharing, or a metallic electron sea — animate in real time.
Chemical bonds form because atoms rearrange their outer electrons to reach a lower-energy, more stable configuration — but exactly how they do that depends on how unevenly the two atoms pull on those electrons. This 2D canvas simulator lets you pick any two elements from a curated periodic-table set, computes the Pauling electronegativity difference (ΔEN) between them live, and classifies the bond using the standard chemistry thresholds: ΔEN ≥ 1.7 is ionic (one atom transfers an electron outright, forming attracting ions), 0.4–1.7 is polar covalent (the electron pair is shared but skewed toward the stronger puller), and below 0.4 is nonpolar covalent (shared almost evenly). Pick two metals and the model switches to a metallic bond instead — a lattice of positive ion cores sitting in a shared sea of delocalized electrons. Each case animates the actual electron behavior: transfer for ionic, an orbiting shared pair for covalent, and a drifting electron sea for metallic.
Pick any two elements and watch their electronegativity difference predict and animate the resulting ionic, polar/nonpolar covalent, or metallic bond.
