What is Langton's Ant?

Langton's Ant is a Turing-complete cellular automaton invented by Chris Langton in 1986. An 'ant' moves on a binary grid following two rules: on a white cell, turn right, flip the cell to black, move forward; on a black cell, turn left, flip to white, move forward. Despite these minimal rules the long-term behaviour is surprisingly rich.

What is the 'highway' and when does it appear?

After approximately 10,000 steps the ant abandons its pseudo-random wandering and enters a precisely repeating diagonal corridor — the 'highway'. Every 104 steps the pattern advances 2 cells diagonally, propagating forever. The highway has been proven to exist for all sufficiently large finite grids but its exact onset step depends on initial conditions.

What are multi-colour turmites?

Generalised Langton's Ants use n colours rather than 2. Each colour maps to a turn direction (R=right, L=left, U=U-turn, N=no turn). The rule string 'RLLLLRRRLLL' for example defines 11 colours. These turmites can produce fractal structures, symmetric tilings, and highly complex space-filling paths.

Is Langton's Ant Turing complete?

Yes. It has been proven that a two-counter Minsky machine (and therefore a universal Turing machine) can be simulated by a generalised multi-colour Langton's Ant. The 2-colour classic ant itself is not known to be computationally universal, but it exhibits all hallmarks of complex behaviour: sensitive dependence on initial conditions and unpredictable long transients.
