What is the Abelian Sandpile Model?

The Abelian Sandpile Model (ASM), introduced by Bak, Tang and Wiesenfeld in 1987, is a cellular automaton defined by a simple toppling rule: when a grid cell accumulates 4 or more grains, it fires — losing 4 grains and donating one grain to each of its 4 orthogonal neighbours. This is because the toppling rules on an integer lattice admit a rich algebraic structure — the set of stable configurations forms an Abelian group — and the 'odometer function' (how many times each cell toppled) satisfies a discrete PDE related to the obstacle problem.
