Assessing a Colony Before Winter
Winter prep starts in late summer, not the first frost. Before doing anything to the hive itself, assess three things: colony strength (enough bees to form a viable winter cluster, roughly covering five or more frames going into autumn for a National hive), health (mite load and brood pattern), and stores. UK colonies typically need in the region of 18-20kg of honey stores to see them through to spring, more in a hard winter or at altitude. Hefting the hive (lifting one side to judge weight by feel) is the traditional low-disturbance way to check stores through winter; a light hive in October needs feeding, a light hive in January needs emergency fondant, not syrup, since syrup can chill the cluster and bees struggle to process it in the cold.
Feeding and Varroa Treatment Timing
If stores are short, feed strong 2:1 sugar syrup in late summer/early autumn while bees can still process and cap it before temperatures drop and their metabolism slows. Feeding too late in the year risks leaving uncapped, fermenting syrup in the hive over winter.
Varroa treatment timing matters as much as the product used. Most VMD-authorised treatments (such as thymol-based Apiguard or oxalic-acid products) are applied in late summer/early autumn specifically to protect the long-lived "winter bees" being reared at that time, since these are the bees that must survive through to spring. A colony that goes into winter with a high mite load, even if well-fed, is at much greater risk of not making it to spring due to virus loads carried by Varroa.
Reducing Entrances and Excluding Pests
Fit an entrance reducer or mouse guard from autumn onward. Mice looking for a warm, food-rich place to overwinter are a genuine and common UK hazard, and a mouse that gets into a broodless winter cluster can do serious damage to comb and stores. A reduced entrance also helps the colony defend itself with fewer bees on guard duty, and cuts wind-driven draughts across the cluster.
Wrapping and Insulating the Hive
Wrapping is about slowing heat loss, not sealing the hive. Suitable materials include breathable roofing felt, corrugated plastic (Correx) wraps, or purpose-made foam hive jackets; all should allow some moisture to migrate out rather than trapping it as a plastic sheet with no breathability would. On the roof, a layer of rigid insulation board (such as Kingspan or Celotex offcuts) above the crown board addresses the single biggest source of heat loss, since warm air rises and most heat escapes through the top of the hive. An "eke" (a shallow spacer box) is often used to create room for insulation or an absorbent quilt above the crown board without altering the rest of the hive's internal volume.
Whatever wrapping method is used, it should be secure enough to withstand winter winds, applied after the autumn feeding and treatment programme is finished, and removed again in spring once daytime temperatures are reliably warm enough that the extra insulation is no longer needed and would otherwise encourage overheating and excess moisture.
Ventilation Still Matters
It is tempting to wrap a hive as tightly as possible against the cold, but a completely sealed hive in winter is a bigger risk than a slightly draughty one. Bees generate a surprising amount of water vapour through respiration and honey consumption; without an escape route that moisture condenses on cold internal surfaces and drips back onto the cluster, chilling bees far more effectively than cold dry air ever would. Most experienced UK beekeepers leave some form of top ventilation (a matchstick or coin under one corner of the crown board, or a mesh floor with the Varroa tray left out) even on a well-insulated hive through winter, precisely to let that moisture escape upward and out rather than condense and drip.
Monitoring and Emergency Response
Once winter sets in, disturbance should be minimal: a quick weight-check by hefting every few weeks, and a listen or gentle knock on the hive wall on a still day to confirm a healthy hum, is normally enough. Full inspections should wait for a calm day above roughly 10°C when bees can fly to void waste and the colony won't chill from having the roof off. If a colony is found dead, remove and store the comb somewhere mouse- and wax-moth-proof, and investigate cause (starvation, damp, disease) before reusing the equipment, since damp or disease-affected comb can compromise a future colony.
