What is the Oort Cloud?

The Oort Cloud is a theoretical spherical shell of icy bodies surrounding our Solar System, extending from about 200 to 50,000 astronomical units (AU) away from the Sun. It is believed to be the source of many long-period comets that visit us only once in thousands or even millions of years.
