Artemis: Return to the Moon
Artemis I (November 2022): uncrewed Orion capsule orbited the Moon successfully — first SLS launch. Artemis II (September 2025): first crewed flight around the Moon since Apollo 17 (1972). Four astronauts, 10-day mission, free-return trajectory. Artemis III (targeting 2026-2027): first Moon landing since 1972 — including the first woman and first person of color on the lunar surface. Lunar lander: SpaceX Starship HLS (Human Landing System). Lunar Gateway: small space station in lunar orbit — Habitation and Logistics Outpost (HALO) + Power and Propulsion Element (PPE). International partners: ESA, JAXA, CSA contributing modules. Artemis Accords: 43 nations have signed the framework for peaceful lunar exploration. Goal: sustainable lunar presence by 2030, using the Moon as a testbed for Mars technologies.
SpaceX Starship
Starship: the largest and most powerful rocket ever built — 121 meters tall, 5,000 tonnes at liftoff. Super Heavy booster: 33 Raptor engines, ~7,590 tonnes of thrust. IFT-5 (October 2024): first successful booster catch by "Mechazilla" chopstick arms — a landmark engineering achievement. Rapid iteration: 5 integrated flight tests in 18 months. Full reusability: both stages designed for rapid turnaround — could reduce launch costs to <$10/kg to orbit (vs. $2,700/kg for Falcon 9). Payload: 100-150 tonnes to LEO (reusable), 250+ tonnes (expendable). Applications: Starlink V2 deployment (up to 60 large satellites per launch), Artemis HLS, Mars missions, point-to-point Earth transport. Orbital refueling: multiple tanker flights to fill Starship in orbit — required for deep space missions. The rocket that could make Mars colonization economically feasible.
Mars and Beyond
SpaceX Mars plans: Elon Musk targets 2028-2030 for first uncrewed Starship landing on Mars. Mars transit: 6-9 months each way, Hohmann transfer orbit, launch windows every 26 months. Challenges: radiation (equivalent to 60% of astronaut career dose limit for round trip), microgravity bone/muscle loss, psychological isolation. Mars habitat concepts: ISRU (In-Situ Resource Utilization) — producing oxygen, water, and rocket fuel from Martian resources. MOXIE (Mars 2020): successfully produced oxygen from CO₂ atmosphere. Mars Sample Return: NASA/ESA mission to bring back Perseverance's cached samples — restructured, targeting early 2030s. Jupiter and beyond: Europa Clipper (launched October 2024) — investigating Europa's subsurface ocean for habitability. Dragonfly: nuclear-powered rotorcraft for Titan — launch targeting 2028.
The Commercial Space Economy
Global space economy: $570 billion (2024), projected to exceed $1.8 trillion by 2035. Satellite internet: Starlink (7,000+ satellites, 4+ million subscribers), OneWeb, Amazon Kuiper (first satellites launched 2024). Space tourism: Blue Origin (suborbital), SpaceX (Polaris Dawn achieved first commercial spacewalk, September 2024), Axiom Space missions to ISS. Commercial space stations: Axiom (module attached to ISS, transitioning to free-flying), Orbital Reef (Blue Origin + Sierra Space), Starlab (Voyager Space + Airbus). ISS: planned deorbit by 2031 using SpaceX deorbit vehicle. In-space manufacturing: fiber optics (FOMS, Flawless Photonics), pharmaceuticals (Varda Space), advanced materials. Space mining: AstroForge targeting near-Earth asteroids for platinum-group metals. Space solar power: ESA SOLARIS studying feasibility, JAXA targeting 2030s demonstration. National security: Space Force, space domain awareness, satellite servicing and debris removal.
