Structure of the Solar System
Our solar system formed ~4.6 billion years ago from a gravitationally collapsing molecular cloud. The Sun (G2V main-sequence star, ~73% H, ~25% He) contains 99.86% of the system’s mass. Inner planets (terrestrial): Mercury (smallest, 0.39 AU, no atmosphere), Venus (hottest, 462°C, runaway greenhouse), Earth (liquid water, life), Mars (thin CO₂ atmosphere, evidence of past water). Asteroid belt : between Mars and Jupiter, ~1 million asteroids >1 km. Outer planets (gas/ice giants): Jupiter (largest, Great Red Spot, 95 moons including Ganymede — largest moon in the solar system), Saturn (rings, Titan with nitrogen atmosphere), Uranus (tilted 98°), Neptune (strongest winds ~2,100 km/h). How many planets are in the solar system?
8 planets: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars (inner/terrestrial), Jupiter, Saturn (gas giants), Uranus, Neptune (ice giants). Pluto was reclassified as a dwarf planet in 2006 by the IAU because it hasn’t cleared its orbital neighborhood. Other dwarf planets: Eris, Makemake, Haumea, Ceres.
Could there be life on Mars?
Mars had liquid water billions of years ago (evidence from river channels, mineral deposits). Current conditions (thin atmosphere, cold, radiation) challenge surface life, but subsurface microbes could potentially exist. Perseverance is collecting samples for return to Earth. If life existed, it was likely microbial. Mars remains the top candidate for past extraterrestrial life.
What is the James Webb Space Telescope?
JWST is a 6.5-meter infrared space telescope at L2 (1.5M km from Earth), launched Dec 2021. What is the Artemis program?
