Queen Rearing and Requeening: Grafting, Introduction Methods and Timing

Why raise your own queens
Most beginner and intermediate beekeepers buy in queens from a breeder, and there is nothing wrong with that. But once an apiary grows beyond a handful of colonies, raising your own queens starts to make sense: it is cheaper, it lets you propagate the traits that actually matter in your own bees (gentleness, low swarming tendency, good overwintering, steady laying pattern), and it gives you a ready supply of spare queens for making up nucs, replacing failures, or requeening aggressive colonies without waiting weeks for a delivery.
Queen rearing is really two separate skills bolted together. The first is biological: understanding that a female larva becomes a queen rather than a worker purely because of the food and space she is given in the first three days of life, and that colonies raise queens under three circumstances — supersedure (replacing a failing queen), swarming (splitting to reproduce), or emergency (responding to sudden queenlessness). The second skill is mechanical: manipulating a colony so that it does the queen-raising work for you, on your schedule, and producing more usable queens than a natural process would.
None of this requires exotic equipment. A grafting tool, a queenright cell-builder colony, some plastic queen cups and a couple of small mating nucleus boxes will get a competent beekeeper through their first season of queen rearing.
Grafting: moving larvae into artificial cell cups
Grafting is the technique of transferring a very young worker larva (ideally under 24 hours old, translucent and curled in a small pool of royal jelly) from its own cell into an artificial plastic queen cup using a fine grafting tool or a soft paintbrush. The larva is lifted on a thin film of royal jelly rather than pinched, since bruising kills it. Good light, reading glasses if you need them, and a cool, humid room all make a real difference to graft take rates — larvae dry out and die quickly once removed from the hive.
Grafted cups are mounted on cell bars and given to a strong, well-fed, queenless "starter" colony, which floods the cups with royal jelly within hours if it accepts the graft. After a day or two the bars can be moved into a queenright "finisher" colony that has been given a queen excluder to keep the queen away from the cells, where the bees cap and finish the cells over the following ten days. This split starter/finisher approach consistently produces better-fed, larger queens than leaving the whole job to one colony throughout.
Beekeepers who find grafting fiddly often use the Miller or Hopkins methods instead, which coax the colony into drawing queen cells along the edge of a comb of young larvae without any manual transfer — lower yield per round, but no grafting skill required, which suits a hobbyist raising a handful of queens a year.
Cell builder colonies and timing
A cell builder needs three things in abundance: young nurse bees, pollen and honey stores, and warmth. A colony that is boiling over with bees, has open frames of pollen either side of the cell bar, and is fed a light sugar syrup through the process will draw far better cells than one that is under-strength or short of protein. Many queen rearers shake extra nurse bees from two or three other colonies into the starter the night before grafting to guarantee a surplus of young bees relative to open brood.
Timing in the UK season matters more than in warmer climates. Queen rearing works best from late May through July, once drone populations have built up (queens need well-mated drones from multiple colonies for good genetic diversity, and a poorly mated queen is often a worse outcome than no queen rearing at all) and while forage is reliable enough to support both cell building and mating flights. Grafting into a wet, cold June with few drones flying is a recipe for poor mating success even if the cells themselves look perfect.
Mating nucleus colonies
Ripe queen cells are moved into small mating nucleus colonies ("mini-nucs" or standard-frame nucs) a day or two before emergence is due. Each nuc needs enough young bees, stores and comb to support the virgin queen through her orientation flights, mating flights (typically over several days, weather permitting, 7–10 days after emergence) and the start of laying, roughly 2–3 weeks after the cell is introduced. Mini-nucs are economical with bees and let one beekeeper run many mating units in a small apiary, but they are also more vulnerable to chilling, robbing and drifting than full-sized nucs, so they need close attention.
Once a queen is confirmed mated and laying a solid worker brood pattern, she can be caged and either sold, banked in a queenless holding colony for later use, or used directly to requeen a colony in the same apiary.
Requeening: methods and acceptance rates
Introducing a new queen to an established colony is the highest-risk moment in the whole process, because worker bees are naturally suspicious of any queen that does not carry the colony's own pheromone signature and will ball and kill an unfamiliar queen if introduced carelessly. The standard safeguard is a slow-release introduction cage — a JZ-BZ or similar push-in cage with a candy plug — left in the colony for two to three days so workers can acclimatise to the new queen's pheromones through the cage mesh before they chew through the candy and release her themselves.
Acceptance is far more reliable when the colony has been queenless for 24 hours before introduction (never introduce directly after removing the old queen — residual queen pheromone lingers and triggers aggression), when all emergency queen cells the workers have started are found and destroyed, and when the introduction happens during a period of steady forage rather than a dearth, since hungry, stressed colonies are more likely to reject a new queen. Even with good technique, a beekeeper doing a lot of requeening should expect the occasional failure and always keep a spare queen or the means to raise emergency cells as a backup.
Common reasons for requeening in a UK apiary include an ageing queen whose laying pattern has become patchy or drone-heavy, a colony that has become persistently defensive or prone to swarming, or a deliberate upgrade to bring in disease-resistant or locally adapted stock. Late summer, after the main honey flow but while there is still enough forage and warmth for the new queen to build a laying pattern before winter, is generally the best window for planned requeening in most of the UK.
