Plastic: The Forever Pollutant

Every year, a staggering 380 million tons of plastic are produced globally – that’s more than double the amount from just 20 years ago. This massive production has led to an alarming influx of plastic into our oceans, with approximately 11 million tons entering them annually.

A significant portion of this plastic ends up in vast areas like the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, a swirling mass estimated to be three times the size of France and containing around 80,000 tons of debris. Microplastics are now found virtually everywhere – from human blood and placentas to the deepest ocean trenches.

The impact on marine life is devastating; over 100,000 mammals, turtles, and seabirds die each year due to plastic ingestion or entanglement. Sadly, a large percentage of single-use plastics, like packaging and bottles, take hundreds of years to decompose, contributing significantly to the problem.

Fortunately, many countries have already taken steps to address this issue, with over 100 banning single-use plastics and exploring extended producer responsibility schemes where companies are responsible for cleanup efforts. However, powerful industries continue to push for plastic production fueled by petrochemicals.
