Light Sources & Spectral Power

All light sources emit a spectrum of wavelengths, but not all are equally effective. The spectral power distribution (SPD) defines the intensity of each wavelength emitted. Different SPDs produce different colors and levels of illumination.

Incandescent bulbs have a broad SPD, producing warm light. LEDs offer greater control over color temperature through adjusting their SPD. Understanding an SPD is key to predicting how light will behave in your simulation.

Illuminance & Lux

Illuminance, measured in lux (lx), represents the amount of light falling on a surface. It’s directly proportional to the luminous flux emitted by a source and inversely proportional to the square of the distance.

Lux values are crucial for determining appropriate lighting levels for various tasks – reading requires higher illuminance than general ambient lighting.

Color Rendering Index (CRI)

The Color Rendering Index (CRI) measures a light source’s ability to render colors accurately compared to natural daylight. A CRI of 100 indicates perfect color rendering.

Lower CRI values mean the light source will alter the appearance of colors in your simulation, potentially leading to inaccurate visual representations.

Light Distribution & Fixture Types

Different fixture types distribute light differently. Point sources (e.g., spotlights) create focused beams, while diffuse sources (e.g., lampshades) spread light more evenly.

Consider the intended use of the space when selecting fixtures – task lighting requires directed illumination, while ambient lighting needs broader coverage.
