Rethinking the lawn: clover lawns and flower lawns

A closely mown, weed-free lawn of ryegrass or fine fescue is close to a biological desert for pollinators — nothing to eat, nowhere to nest. Two easy adjustments change that without giving up a lawn entirely. A clover lawn overseeds or partially replaces turf grass with white clover, which stays low, needs less feeding (it fixes its own nitrogen), stays greener in summer drought than grass, and produces a steady supply of flowers if mown slightly less often or at a slightly higher blade height. A flower lawn goes further, deliberately including low-growing flowering “weeds” — self-heal, bird's-foot trefoil, daisies, speedwell — alongside grass and clover, mown perhaps every three to four weeks instead of weekly, so flowers get a chance to open between cuts.

The trade-off is aesthetic: a flower lawn looks less uniform and more like a naturalistic meadow-lawn hybrid than a bowling green, and some people mind that more than others. A reasonable compromise many UK gardeners use is to keep paths and a small central area closely mown for use, while letting the edges or a back section run longer and flower.

No-mow initiatives and no-mow areas

The UK charity Plantlife runs an annual No Mow May campaign, encouraging households to stop mowing for the month of May (and ideally longer) to let spring wildflowers like dandelion, clover and daisies flower and set seed, and then to adopt a longer-term reduced-mowing regime for at least part of the lawn afterwards. Their citizen-science surveys (“Every Flower Counts”) have repeatedly found that lawns mown only once a month produce many times more flowers, and support far more pollinators, than weekly-mown lawns — but also that mowing occasionally (rather than never) tends to produce the best flower diversity, since a completely unmown lawn eventually gets swamped by a few dominant tall grasses.

A practical no-mow area doesn't have to be the whole garden — a strip along a fence, an awkward slope, or a patch behind a shed all work well as permanent low-mow zones, cut once or twice a year rather than weekly, ideally with cuttings removed to keep fertility down and flowers coming back stronger each year.

Edge habitats: woodland edges, hedgerows and garden margins

Edge habitats — the transition zone between two different habitat types, such as woodland and open field, or a mown lawn and a border — are disproportionately valuable for wildlife because they combine resources from both sides: shelter and nesting from one, forage and sun from the other. A woodland edge planting in a garden might use spring bulbs and early perennials (primrose, bluebell, lungwort) that flower before the tree canopy closes over and shades the ground, exactly mimicking how a real woodland-edge plant community times its flowering. Leaving a rough, unmanicured strip between a lawn and a hedge or fence — brambles, nettles, long grass, ivy left to flower in autumn — costs nothing and provides nesting sites for solitary bees and bumblebees as well as late-season ivy forage, one of the last major nectar sources before winter.

Field margins, roadside plantings and farmland strips

At farm scale, UK agri-environment schemes (historically Countryside Stewardship, and its predecessors and successors under Environmental Land Management) pay farmers to leave uncultivated or specially sown field margins around arable fields — typically a strip a few metres wide sown with a pollinator and wild bird seed mix, or simply left to naturally regenerate, providing forage and nesting habitat along the edge of otherwise intensively farmed land. These strips matter disproportionately because modern arable fields, once flowering weeds are eliminated by herbicide, otherwise offer almost no forage between the narrow flowering windows of the crop itself.

Farmland strips sown specifically for pollinators (sometimes called pollen and nectar mixes) commonly include red clover, sainfoin, bird's-foot trefoil, knapweed and phacelia — chosen for a long succession of flowering through the season and for tolerance of ordinary farm soils. Roadside plantings and verge management follow a similar logic at a smaller scale: many UK local authorities and organisations such as Plantlife's “Road Verge Campaign” now advocate cutting road verges only once or twice a year, after wildflowers have set seed, rather than mowing them like amenity grass every few weeks, since road verges collectively add up to a very large area of otherwise wasted potential habitat.
