Why Your Brain Treats a Feed Like a Tribe: The Evolutionary Psychology of FOMO

A survival instinct with no off switch
For most of human evolutionary history, group membership was not optional — it was survival infrastructure. Being excluded from the tribe meant losing access to shared food, protection and cooperation. Knowing where the group was, what it was doing, and where you stood within it was, quite literally, life-or-death information.
Out of this pressure, human brains evolved a set of standing routines: constantly monitor your standing within the social group, feel distress at signs of possible exclusion, actively seek information about what the group is doing, and compare yourself to others to calibrate your position. These mechanisms were well matched to small, stable tribes of a few dozen to a few hundred people. They are far less well matched to a feed that puts you in continuous, real-time contact with the curated highlights of thousands of people at once.
The mismatch hypothesis and status competition
Evolutionary psychologists call this a mismatch: a gap between the environment a psychological mechanism evolved to handle and the environment it is now operating in. Your brain treats a stream of notifications roughly the way an ancestor's brain would have treated seeing the tribe gathered without them — as a potential threat to social standing.
Psychologist Roy Baumeister's research on the 'need to belong' argues that humans have a basic drive for social connection, comparable in urgency to hunger or thirst. Under this view, FOMO is that drive misfiring in a digital environment that presents far more 'group activity' than anyone could possibly join. Status competition compounds the effect: research on social comparison shows that scrolling activates the same status-monitoring circuitry that once helped track standing within a tribal hierarchy — except the comparison set is no longer a few dozen known peers, it is everyone you have ever met plus an endless supply of strangers, celebrities and curated highlight reels. It is a competition that was never winnable at that scale.
The study that put FOMO on the map
FOMO existed as a folk concept long before it had a scientific definition. That changed with Przybylski et al. (2013), published in Computers in Human Behavior, in which Andrew Przybylski and colleagues at the University of Oxford formally defined and measured the construct for the first time. Working from Self-Determination Theory, they found that FOMO was associated with lower satisfaction of three core psychological needs — autonomy, competence and relatedness — and that younger adults and men reported higher FOMO levels on average. Crucially, FOMO predicted social media engagement above and beyond general internet use, including engagement at inopportune moments such as while driving, in class, or immediately on waking. The study also introduced the Fear of Missing Out Scale (FoMOs), still a standard measurement tool in this research area.
From correlation to a randomized controlled trial
Correlational studies can show that FOMO and social media use move together, but they cannot show which one causes the other. Hunt et al. (2018), from the University of Pennsylvania, closed that gap with a genuine experiment. In a study titled 'No More FOMO: Limiting Social Media Decreases Loneliness and Depression', 143 participants were randomly assigned either to cap Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat at 10 minutes per platform per day (30 minutes total) or to continue using social media as usual, for three weeks.
The limited-use group showed significantly greater reductions in loneliness and depression than the control group. Both groups saw some decrease in anxiety and FOMO, but the limited group improved more — and the effect was largest for participants who started with higher depression scores. Because participants were randomly assigned rather than self-selected, this is much stronger evidence than a correlational survey that reduced use causally improves these outcomes, not merely that people who already feel better happen to use social media less.
What later research adds: scale, culture and the teenage brain
Subsequent research has filled in the picture. Elhai et al. (2020), a meta-analysis in Psychiatry Research pooling 15 studies and over 8,000 participants, found that FOMO strongly predicts problematic smartphone use, and that FOMO's negative effect on wellbeing is largely mediated by increased checking behaviour crowding out offline activity and relationships.
Beyens et al. (2020) compared FOMO across cultures and found it is a near-universal vulnerability, but its triggers differ: individualistic Western cultures (US, UK, Australia) showed FOMO tied more to personal achievement and unique experiences, while collectivistic cultures (Japan, South Korea, China) showed FOMO tied more to group activities and maintaining social harmony. FOMO tracked with lower wellbeing everywhere, but what people feared missing depended on what their culture valued.
Perhaps most striking is Sherman et al. (2016) from UCLA, which used fMRI to scan adolescents viewing Instagram-style photos with varying numbers of 'likes'. Photos with more likes activated teenage reward circuitry more strongly than identical photos with fewer likes — and this reward response was measurably stronger in adolescents than has typically been observed in adults, consistent with the adolescent brain's heightened sensitivity to peer feedback during puberty. That developmental sensitivity helps explain why teenagers are disproportionately vulnerable to social-comparison-driven FOMO.
