Composition and Structure

Comets are primarily composed of ice – frozen water, ammonia, methane, and carbon dioxide – mixed with dust and rocky material. This icy nucleus is often irregular in shape.

As a comet approaches the Sun, solar radiation causes the ices to sublimate (transition directly from solid to gas). This creates a glowing atmosphere around the nucleus called a coma.

The coma is a vast, diffuse cloud of gas and dust surrounding the nucleus. It can extend for millions of kilometers.
