Neural Correlates of Consciousness (NCC)
The concept of NCC refers to the minimal set of neuronal events sufficient for a specific conscious experience. Research consistently identifies areas like the posterior parietal cortex (PPC), prefrontal cortex (PFC), and thalamus as playing crucial roles.
Specifically, activity within the PPC is often linked to our sense of self-awareness – where we are in space – while the PFC contributes to higher-order cognitive functions associated with consciousness, such as decision-making and planning.
Integrated Information Theory (IIT)
