One insect, several very different boxes

The top bar hive: horizontal, low-cost, low-tech
Top bar hives, which trace their conceptual roots to traditional horizontal log and basket hives used for centuries in Africa and parts of Asia, take a third approach. Instead of stacking boxes vertically, the hive is a single long horizontal box, and bees build free-hanging comb downward from a row of top bars rather than full frames. Because there's no extractor needed — honey is typically harvested as cut comb rather than spun out — top bar hives are popular for low-cost, do-it-yourself beekeeping, particularly in regions where imported standardised equipment is expensive or hard to source.

The Flow Hive: modern convenience layered onto tradition
Launched in Australia in 2015, the Flow Hive is fundamentally a Langstroth hive with a proprietary innovation added on top: specially moulded plastic honey frames that, when a key is turned, split internally along vertical channels, allowing ripe honey to drain directly out of a tap at the base of the hive and into a jar — without opening the hive, disturbing the bees, or using a centrifugal extractor at all. Brood box management underneath the Flow super is identical to a standard Langstroth hive in every other respect.
The appeal is speed and minimal disturbance at harvest time — extraction that would otherwise take the better part of an afternoon with a hand-crank or electric extractor can be done directly from the tap with almost no disruption to the colony — but the Flow Hive is also considerably more expensive to buy than a comparable Langstroth setup, and the underlying colony still needs the same regular brood-box inspections as any Langstroth hive for swarm and disease management.

None of these designs is objectively "best" — they represent different answers to the question of what a beekeeper values most. A commercial honey producer chasing maximum yield and needing dependable disease-management access will almost always choose Langstroth. A hobbyist prioritising minimal time commitment and natural colony behaviour, and willing to accept lower honey yields, is well served by a Warré hive. Someone building their own low-cost equipment, perhaps in a resource-limited setting, gravitates toward a top bar design. And a beekeeper who values convenience at harvest time and doesn't mind a higher upfront cost may choose a Flow Hive, while still needing to manage the brood box conventionally.
