What Is a Honeybee?

The Western honeybee, Apis mellifera, is a eusocial insect: individuals live in a permanent colony, cooperate in raising young, and divide labour among distinct castes rather than each bee reproducing independently. A single colony typically contains one queen, tens of thousands of female workers, and — seasonally — a few hundred to a couple of thousand male drones. This social structure, refined over tens of millions of years of evolution, is what allows honeybees to build complex nests, store large amounts of food, and survive winters that would kill a solitary insect.

The Three Castes

The queen is the colony's sole reproductive female. She mates early in life during one or more nuptial flights, storing sperm for years, and afterward spends her life laying eggs — potentially thousands per day during peak season — while a retinue of workers feeds and grooms her. Workers are female but normally non-reproductive; they perform every other job in the colony, with tasks shifting as they age — starting with cleaning and nursing duties inside the hive and graduating to foraging outside as they mature. Drones are male, exist mainly to mate with virgin queens from other colonies, and are produced from unfertilised eggs. Drones carry no sting and do no foraging or hive work; colonies typically expel surviving drones before winter, when their upkeep is no longer worth the food they consume.

From Egg to Adult: The Bee Life Cycle

All three castes pass through complete metamorphosis — egg, larva, pupa, adult — but on different schedules. A fertilised egg can become either a worker or a queen depending on the food it receives as a larva (queens are fed richer, more abundant royal jelly throughout development, workers only briefly); unfertilised eggs become drones. Typical development times are around 16 days for a queen, 21 days for a worker, and 24 days for a drone — the queen's faster development is one reason a colony can quickly raise a replacement queen in an emergency.

How a Colony Functions as a Unit

Individually, a bee is short-lived and simple; collectively, a colony behaves almost like a single organism. Foragers bring in nectar and pollen, house bees process and store it as honey and bee bread, nurse bees feed developing larvae, and the whole colony works together to keep the brood nest at a stable temperature (around 34-35°C) regardless of the weather outside. This division of labour, combined with the chemical and dance-based communication described elsewhere on this site, lets a colony respond quickly to changing conditions — surging foraging effort when a nectar flow starts, or clustering tightly to conserve heat through winter.

Beyond producing honey, wax, propolis, and royal jelly, honeybees are one of the world's most important pollinators, visiting flowers for nectar and pollen and, in the process, transferring pollen between plants. This service underpins the yield of a large share of the crops humans depend on, from orchard fruit to many vegetables and oilseeds, which is a major reason honeybee health and colony losses are a matter of public concern well beyond the beekeeping community.
