Pandemic Genomic Surveillance: Phylogenetic Tree Builder (2D)
2D outbreak phylogenetics lab: simulate a virus genome mutating and branching across generations, compute real pairwise Hamming genetic distances, and watch a UPGMA dendrogram of the sampled lineages build itself from the distance matrix.
This 2D companion runs the same genomic-surveillance idea as the 3D version through a real bioinformatics pipeline rendered on a plain canvas: a synthetic viral genome mutates and transmits across generations, sampled lineages are compared with true pairwise Hamming distances, and a UPGMA dendrogram is built live from that distance matrix — so the branch structure you see is computed from the mutation data, not drawn for effect.
