Steenbok Open Shrub Lab — 2D Bush-to-Bush Foraging
A top-down 2D companion to the 3D steenbok scene: small antelope dash from shrub to shrub across open savanna, browsing to rebuild energy while the open ground between bushes raises the odds of a startle — the same bush-selection foraging behavior read as a clean overhead map with live feeding, energy and startle readouts.
This 2D companion turns the 3D steenbok scene into a clean overhead map of the same bush-to-bush foraging logic: a scattering of shrubs sits across an open savanna field, and each steenbok picks a target bush — usually the nearest one, though the selection slider controls how often it gambles on a farther patch instead — then crosses the open ground to reach it. Browsing at a bush steadily rebuilds energy at a rate set by that bush's quality; energy drains while crossing exposed terrain, faster the more open the terrain slider makes it. Any steenbok caught away from cover for too long risks a startle, a probability that climbs with terrain openness and falls with vigilance, triggering a brief sprint toward the target bush and a jolt of lost energy. A live readout panel tracks completed feeding visits, the herd's average energy, its average speed and a running startle count, making the trade-off between efficient bush selection and predation exposure directly visible instead of implied.
2D top-down steenbok foraging lab: nearest-vs-random bush targeting scaled by a selection parameter, energy that rises while browsing and falls while exposed, an openness- and vigilance-scaled startle probability during open-ground crossings, and a live feeding/energy/startle readout panel.
