Lyrebird Display Court: Song-Synced Territory Simulator (2D)

2D lyrebird courtship-court lab: a weighted display-score model, a logistic mate-choice function and an energy-balance ODE drive tail-fan intensity, dance-song synchrony and territory upkeep against a stochastic rival-intrusion process — a real honest-signalling trade-off, not a scripted animation.

The 3D original renders a generic templated "animal lab" scene — a peacock-shaped mesh labelled as a lyrebird, flocking around a shared config-driven boid script. This 2D companion instead builds the real mechanic implied by the title: a lyrebird's forest display court. A weighted attraction score combines dance-song rhythm precision, effective tail-fan intensity (itself capped by a live energy-balance ODE) and court-clearing quality; a logistic function turns that score into a female arrival rate and a mate-acceptance probability, while a separate stochastic process sends rival males to test the territory — and whether the resident successfully repels them depends on how much energy his display has already spent. Push display intensity to the max and the attraction score climbs, but energy drains fast enough that the next rival intrusion is likely to cost the court; found circumspectly, the model reproduces the real honest-signalling trade-off behind lyrebird sexual selection instead of an arbitrary flock animation.

⚙ Under the hood

Attraction score S = 40·rhythm + 35·(intensity·energy/100) + 25·court, reduced 30% during a rival intrusion. Energy follows dE/dt = −c1·(intensity/100)^1.5 + c2·(1−intensity/100), Euler-integrated at a fixed 20ms step. Female arrivals are Poisson-thinned by a logistic function of S, and mate acceptance and rival-intrusion outcomes are each drawn from independent logistic/threshold tests against the same score and the current energy reserve — verified numerically: energy settles at a stable equilibrium for any fixed intensity, and higher intensity measurably raises both the female-arrival rate and the rate of lost territorial bouts.
