Firefly Courtship Code Lab: Flash-Pattern Recognition (2D)

2D firefly courtship lab: males emit a species-specific interflash interval, females coincidence-detect the code and answer after a timed delay, and only correctly matched, correctly timed pairs actually find each other.

This 2D companion replaces the 3D scene's decorative swirl-and-flicker with the actual signal-recognition mechanism fireflies use to find mates: patrolling males emit a timed interflash interval that functions as a species code, stationary females run a coincidence detector against their own innate template and answer only within a timed delay window, and males only lock onto and fly toward a reply that lands inside their own expected response window — so detuning the male code away from the female's template visibly collapses pairing success, making flash-pattern recognition and reproductive isolation directly observable instead of implied.
