Orbital Station-Keeping: Drag Decay & Reboost

A low-orbit space station loses altitude to atmospheric drag and periodically fires a reboost burn to climb back up. Tune altitude, station drag area, solar activity and the reboost trigger to see the decay/reboost sawtooth and propellant cost.

A space station in low Earth orbit is not sitting in a vacuum — faint atmosphere still drags on it, so its altitude continuously decays, faster the lower it gets. Real stations counter this by periodically firing thrusters to reboost back up, spending propellant to buy back altitude. This simulation runs that decay/reboost cycle live: tune starting altitude, the station's drag area-to-mass ratio, solar activity (which puffs up the upper atmosphere and multiplies drag), and the altitude threshold that triggers a reboost burn, then watch the sawtooth altitude graph and the running propellant cost play out.
