Honeybee Waggle Dance Viewer (2D)

A scout bee returns from a flower patch and dances the angle-from-vertical and waggle-run duration that encode bearing and distance to the flowers — watch the recruits decode the dance and fly out to find it themselves.

This 2D companion drives the same waggle-dance encoding as the 3D version through a plain top-down canvas: a scout returns from a randomly chosen flower patch and dances an angle from vertical equal to the patch's bearing minus the sun's bearing, with the waggle run's duration set by distance (0.5 s plus 0.07 s per metre — Karl von Frisch's original calibration). Recruit bees then decode that angle and duration, with noise controlled by the clarity slider, and fly out to the decoded location, landing on target only when the dance was clear enough to read.

⚙ Under the hood

2D top-down waggle-dance lab: dance angle = flower bearing minus sun bearing, waggle duration = 0.5 + distance × 0.07, and recruits decode both with clarity-scaled noise before flying out — the same formulas as the 3D engine.
