Building with a scent instead of a plan
Termite mounds are among the largest structures built by any animal relative to body size — some African and Australian species raise towers several metres tall from workers only a few millimetres long, the rough equivalent of humans building a skyscraper taller than Mount Everest without drawings, surveyors or a single individual who understands the overall design. No termite carries a mental image of the finished mound. What each worker carries is a small pellet of soil mixed with saliva and a pheromone, and a simple behavioural rule for where to put it down.
Stigmergy: coordination through the environment
The French biologist Pierre-Paul Grasse coined the term stigmergy in 1959 specifically to describe this phenomenon: workers coordinate not by signalling directly to one another but by modifying a shared physical environment, and each modification becomes the trigger for the next worker's action. A pellet already deposited carries pheromone; a passing worker is more likely to add its own pellet near a strong pheromone signal than a weak one, because pheromone concentration is the cue the rule responds to. Since a mud pellet has more surface area and a stronger scent gradient the moment it sits next to other pellets, deposits cluster, and clusters attract still more deposits — the same positive-feedback loop that drives ant trail formation and slime mold networks, applied here to solid construction instead of a chemical trail.
worker rule, repeated by thousands of individuals independently: sense pheromone concentration in nearby cells move toward the strongest nearby signal (with some random exploration) if standing on/near existing structure and pheromone is high: deposit a mud pellet, laced with pheromone, here pheromone field decays and diffuses every tick This is enough to grow isolated columns of packed mud upward from the ground. The interesting part is what happens next: two nearby columns, each independently the strongest local pheromone source for the workers building it, begin to lean toward each other as their tops accumulate pellets biased toward the neighbouring column's scent gradient. Eventually the two columns meet and fuse into an arch. No termite decided to build an arch — the arch is what two independently growing, mutually attracted pillars look like once they touch.

Simulating Climate Control
A large termite colony, and in fungus-farming species the fungus gardens they cultivate underground, produce substantial heat and carbon dioxide. The mound's chimney network vents that carbon dioxide and excess heat to the surface while its thick outer walls buffer the interior against the sharp day-night temperature swings of the savanna or desert above. The result is measurable: internal mound temperature and humidity can stay far more stable than the external environment across a 24-hour cycle, a form of climate control achieved with no thermostat, no sensor network in the engineering sense, and no central controller — only distributed workers reacting to local cues, over and over, for a very long time.
Why this matters beyond entomology
Termite construction is one of the founding case studies for the field of swarm intelligence: complex, adaptive, seemingly purposeful structure arising from many simple agents with no central coordinator. Architects have explicitly drawn on the mound's passive ventilation principle in building design — the Eastgate Centre in Harare, Zimbabwe, is the best-known example, using a termite-inspired stack-ventilation strategy to cut its cooling energy use dramatically compared to a conventional air-conditioned building of the same size. The same stigmergic logic — sense the local state of a shared field, act to reinforce or dampen it, let the field carry the coordination — reappears throughout the rest of this site's biology and algorithms sections, from ant foraging to 3D-printer toolpaths inspired by exactly this kind of decentralised construction.
Frequently asked questions
