Polarization of Light

Light is fundamentally transverse – it’s an electromagnetic wave where the oscillating electric field vibrates perpendicular to the direction of propagation. This creates a two-dimensional oscillation, giving light a degree of freedom – polarization. Think of it like a wave moving across water; you can rotate your hand 90 degrees and still have waves moving in different directions.

Unpolarized light, such as sunlight or that emitted by an incandescent bulb, consists of photons vibrating in all possible orientations. It’s a chaotic mix of polarizations. A polarizing filter acts like a gatekeeper, allowing only the lightwaves vibrating along its axis to pass through while blocking those vibrating at other angles.

Polarization itself is the property of light that describes the direction of oscillation of the electric field vector. By passing light through a polarizer, you’re selecting a single polarization state from the original unpolarized beam.

Malus's Law

Once light is already linearly polarized (say, by a first filter) and hits a second filter oriented at angle θ to the first, only the field component along the second filter’s axis survives. Since intensity goes as the square of the field amplitude, the transmitted intensity follows the cosine of the angle, squared — Malus's Law (Étienne-Louis Malus, 1808):

I = I₀ cos²θ At θ = 0 the filters are aligned and all the light that reached the second filter passes; at θ = 90° (‘crossed polarizers’) cos²θ = 0 and no light passes at all, however bright the source. This is the mechanism behind polarized sunglasses reducing glare, LCD screens controlling pixel brightness, and the classic demo of two crossed filters going dark with a third filter at 45° between them paradoxically letting light back through.

I = I₀ cos²θ

Ex = E0x cos(ωt)
Ey = E0y cos(ωt + δ)
δ = 0 or π            & E0x=E0y → linear (±45°) / any ratio → linear at angle
δ = ±π/2, E0x = E0y   → circular
otherwise             → elliptical

Birefringence: how you actually make circular light

You can't create the 90° phase offset needed for circular polarization with an ordinary filter — you need a birefringent material, one whose refractive index depends on the light’s polarization direction. This means that light polarized along one crystal axis (the "fast axis") travels faster through the material than light polarized along the perpendicular axis (the "slow axis"). To achieve this, send linearly polarized light in at 45° to those axes and carefully select the crystal's thickness so the two components end up exactly a quarter-wavelength out of step. This creates a quarter-wave plate: linear polarization in, circular polarization out. A thicker plate introducing a half-wavelength delay is a half-wave plate, which instead flips the orientation of linear polarization, reflecting it about the fast axis.

Applications of Polarization

Polarization is found in many surprising places – from the glare reduction in your sunglasses to the vibrant colors you see when looking at stressed plastic. Consider the example of polarized sunglasses: they are designed to block horizontally polarized light, which is a significant component of reflected glare from surfaces like water or roads. This selective blocking is achieved through the use of polarizing filters that only allow light waves vibrating in one direction to pass through. Liquid crystal displays (LCDs) provide another compelling example. These screens utilize a layer of liquid crystals positioned between two polarizers. By applying an electrical voltage, we can rotate the orientation of the liquid crystals, thereby altering the amount of light transmitted through the display – this directly reflects Malus’s Law and the principles of birefringence. Furthermore, techniques like photoelasticity demonstrate polarization's utility in material analysis. When stress is applied to transparent plastics, it induces birefringence, creating distinctive colored fringes when viewed through crossed polarizers. This allows engineers to visualize and quantify the distribution of mechanical stresses within a physical model with remarkable precision.

Frequently asked questions
