Snowflake Formation (2D)

A hexagonal-grid cellular-automaton model of dendritic ice-crystal growth: branch tips see more open vapor than the hollows between them and freeze faster, which is how a six-armed snowflake forms from a single seed cell.

This 2D companion runs the same hexagonal-grid growth model as the 3D version on a plain canvas: a seed cell at the center freezes its six-fold-symmetric neighbours faster where they have more open access to unfrozen space, which is what turns a single point into a branching dendrite. The temperature slider sets how quickly new cells freeze overall, and the supersaturation (humidity) slider shifts the balance between compact plate growth and sharp branching arms, matching the shape families described by the Nakaya diagram.
