An ice crystal grows from a single seed cell on a hexagonal grid, preserving six-fold symmetry. Branch tips have more open access to water vapor than the hollows between them, so they freeze faster — that is how a branching dendrite forms. Per the Nakaya diagram, the real shape (plate, star, or needle) depends on the combination of temperature and vapor supersaturation; here it is simplified to two sliders.
