Thermohaline Circulation (2D)
A flat-map companion to the 3D AMOC simulator: the same Stommel two-box density model drives animated current particles over a simplified world map. Warm the planet, melt the Arctic, and watch the ocean conveyor weaken — and, past its tipping point, collapse.
This 2D companion runs the identical Stommel (1961) two-box thermohaline model as the 3D version — two boxes exchanging heat and salt, with density ρ = ρ₀[1 − α(T−T₀) + β(S−S₀)] driving the overturning q = k(ρ₁−ρ₂)/ρ₀ — but shows it as animated current particles over a flat world map instead of a 3D globe, so the physics reads the same while the rendering is lighter.
Same Stommel two-box AMOC model as the 3D original: warm the planet, melt Arctic ice or add glacial freshwater and watch the box-model overturning weaken past its hysteretic collapse threshold.
