X-ray Imaging: The Foundation
X-rays, produced by electron beams, are a form of electromagnetic radiation. When X-rays pass through the body, they are absorbed differently by various tissues – denser materials like bone absorb more than soft tissue like muscle.
The resulting pattern of absorption and transmission is captured on a detector (film or digital sensor), creating an image where different densities appear as varying shades of gray. This allows visualization of fractures, foreign objects, and some internal abnormalities.
Attenuation = f(Density, Atomic Number)
Computed Tomography (CT Scan)
A CT scan uses X-rays taken from multiple angles around the body. These images are then reconstructed by a computer to create cross-sectional images – essentially ‘slices’ of the body.
This provides much more detailed anatomical information than a standard X-ray and is particularly useful for detecting tumors, internal bleeding, and complex injuries.
Reconstruction = ∫f(x) dx (Integral representing image formation)
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
MRI utilizes strong magnetic fields and radio waves to generate images. The nuclei of hydrogen atoms in the body align with the magnetic field, and then are disrupted by radio waves.
As the nuclei return to their original alignment, they emit signals that are detected and processed into detailed anatomical images. MRI excels at visualizing soft tissues like ligaments, tendons, and the brain.
Signal = ħω ⋅ B(t) (where ħ is the reduced Planck constant, ω is the angular frequency of the radio wave, and B(t) is the time-varying magnetic field)
Other Imaging Modalities
Ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to create images, primarily used for visualizing organs and blood flow. Nuclear medicine scans employ radioactive tracers to assess organ function.
Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scans detect metabolic activity within the body, providing information about disease processes like cancer.
Frequently asked questions
