Superposition and Quantum Entanglement

In quantum mechanics, a system can exist in multiple states simultaneously until measured. This phenomenon is known as superposition.

Quantum entanglement describes a situation where two or more particles become linked together in such a way that they share the same fate, no matter how far apart they are. Measuring the state of one particle instantly determines the state of the other.

Spontaneous Emission

A key concept in quantum optics is spontaneous emission. An excited atom, which has absorbed energy and jumped to a higher energy level, will spontaneously decay back to its ground state.

This decay releases the excess energy as a photon. The frequency of this emitted photon is precisely equal to the difference between the initial and final energy levels of the atom.

Photon-Photon Interactions

Unlike classical waves, photons do not simply add together. When two or more photons interact, they can undergo processes like absorption and re-emission.

These photon-photon interactions are crucial for phenomena such as laser operation – where stimulated emission amplifies a single photon’s signal to create a coherent beam of light.

Quantum Entanglement

Perhaps the most bizarre aspect of quantum optics is quantum entanglement. Two or more photons can become linked in such a way that their properties are correlated, regardless of the distance separating them.

Measuring the state of one entangled photon instantaneously determines the state of the other – a phenomenon Einstein famously termed 'spooky action at a distance'.

(Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation)
