Nuclear Fission: The Core Concept
At the heart of nuclear energy lies fission, a process where a heavy atomic nucleus (typically Uranium-235) splits into two lighter nuclei. This splitting releases a tremendous amount of energy in the form of kinetic energy and radiation.
The reaction is often initiated by bombarding the target nucleus with a neutron, making it unstable. Upon decay, it emits more neutrons which then trigger further fission events – creating a self-sustaining chain reaction.
n + ²³⁵U → ¹⁴⁰Ba + ⁹²Kr + 31.5 MeV
Chain Reactions and Energy Release
The key to nuclear energy’s power is the chain reaction. Each fission event releases approximately 200 MeV of energy, primarily as kinetic energy of the resulting particles and gamma radiation.
This energy heats a fluid (typically water), which then drives turbines connected to generators – producing electricity. The efficiency of this process depends heavily on reactor design.
E = mc² (Energy released proportional to mass defect)
Types of Nuclear Reactors
Various reactor designs exist, each employing different methods for controlling the chain reaction and managing heat. Notable types include Pressurized Water Reactors (PWRs) and Boiling Water Reactors (BWRs).
PWRs utilize a moderator (usually water) to slow down neutrons, increasing their probability of causing further fission. BWRs allow water to boil directly within the reactor core, generating steam for turbine operation.
Radioactive Waste Management
The operation of nuclear reactors generates radioactive waste, which primarily consists of spent fuel – highly radioactive fuel assemblies that have been removed from the reactor core. This waste requires careful management to prevent environmental contamination and potential harm to human health.
Spent fuel is initially stored in water pools at the reactor site to cool down and reduce its radioactivity. Subsequently, it’s typically transferred to dry storage facilities or consolidated into advanced forms for long-term disposal.
