A 3D beehive with a movable virtual microphone: choose a colony state, place the mic at the entrance, side wall or crown board, and watch the live waveform and spectrogram respond exactly as a real field recording would.

🔬 What It Demonstrates

How colony activity, microphone placement and distance jointly shape the recorded signal — near-field vs. far-field pressure loss, wood's high-frequency damping, and how wind noise erodes signal-to-noise ratio.

🎮 How to Use

Pick a colony state and mic position, then drag the distance and wind sliders. Watch the dominant frequency band, signal level and SNR update, and read the live oscilloscope trace and spectrogram waterfall on the panel.

💡 Did You Know?

The ~285Hz "queen piping" tone and shifts in a colony's broadband hum have been used as a low-cost proxy for swarm prediction — the same recordings musicians sample for ambient and drone compositions.

⚙ Under the hood

Move a virtual microphone around a 3D beehive and watch how colony state, mic placement and distance reshape the recorded waveform and spectrogram.
