What is the golden angle and why does nature use it?

The golden angle is 360°×(2−φ) ≈ 137.508°, where φ = (1+√5)/2 ≈ 1.618 is the golden ratio. Because φ is the 'most irrational' number — its continued-fraction expansion is [1;1,1,1,…], converging slower than any other irrational — successive seeds placed at this angle never align in a radial line. This maximises the angular gap between every new seed and all existing ones, producing the densest possible packing. Nature evolves this arrangement because it maximises light capture, seed count, and structural strength.

Why do sunflowers have Fibonacci numbers of spiral arms?

The number of clockwise and anticlockwise spiral arms visible in a sunflower head are always consecutive Fibonacci numbers: 34 & 55, 55 & 89, or 89 & 144 in large sunflowers. This is because the best rational approximations to 1/φ are consecutive Fibonacci ratios Fₙ/Fₙ₊₁ (e.g. 34/55, 55/89). These rational near-misses create the apparent row structure, while the golden angle itself ensures the overall packing is truly optimal.
