Mars Regolith Sintering — 2D Laser Neck-Growth Lab

A 2D companion to the 3D printer scene: loose Mars regolith grains bond together under a scanning laser as an Arrhenius-controlled neck-growth model fuses touching grains, while porosity and relative density update live.

This 2D companion trades the 3D build scene for a readable cross-section: a packed bed of regolith grains bonds under a scanning laser, with neck growth between touching grains driven by an Arrhenius rate law so hotter, smaller grains sinter faster, exactly as real powder-bed fusion behaves.

⚙ Under the hood

Grain temperatures follow a moving Gaussian laser source plus Newtonian cooling; each neck's growth rate is k₀·exp(−Eₐ/RT), and porosity is derived from the average neck ratio across all grain-to-grain bonds.
