The Model

Annual electricity emissions = monthly kWh × 0.000233 tCO2e/kWh × 12. Annual gas emissions = monthly kWh × 0.000184 tCO2e/kWh × 12 (both approximate UK grid/fuel factors). Car emissions = weekly miles × 0.000254 tCO2e/mile × 52 weeks. Flights = count × 0.15 tCO2e per short-haul return flight. Diet is a lookup: meat-heavy ≈ 3.3 t/yr, average ≈ 2.5 t/yr, vegetarian ≈ 1.5 t/yr, vegan ≈ 1.0 t/yr. All five add up to your total annual footprint in tCO2e.

tCO2e (tonnes of CO2 equivalent) converts every greenhouse gas — CO2, methane, nitrous oxide and others — into one common unit based on its warming potential, so a footprint from flights, cattle and gas boilers can be added together and compared on a single scale.

Diet alone can swing your footprint by more than two tonnes a year — the gap between a meat-heavy diet (≈3.3 t) and a vegan diet (≈1.0 t) is often larger than the entire emissions from a typical car commute. Flights are deceptively cheap-looking per trip but add up fast: six short-haul flights a year adds roughly 0.9 tCO2e, comparable to months of home heating.

Frequently asked questions

What does tCO2e actually mean?

tCO2e stands for tonnes of CO2 equivalent. Greenhouse gases other than CO2 — methane from livestock, nitrous oxide from fertiliser, fluorinated gases from refrigeration — trap heat at different rates, so tCO2e converts each one into the amount of CO2 that would cause the same warming, letting emissions from very different sources (a flight, a cow, a gas boiler) be added on one scale.

Why do electricity and gas use a ×12 and car mileage a ×52?

The sliders ask for typical monthly electricity and gas use and typical weekly car mileage, because that is how most people actually track their bills and driving. Multiplying monthly figures by 12 and weekly figures by 52 simply annualises them so every category in the model is expressed in the same tCO2e-per-year unit before they are summed.

How is the diet factor calculated if it isn't a simple multiplication?

Diet emissions don't scale linearly with a single number the way electricity or mileage do — they depend on the whole pattern of what you eat over a year. Instead the model uses four representative annual totals (meat-heavy, average, vegetarian, vegan) drawn from typical dietary carbon-footprint studies, and the slider simply selects which of the four applies to you.

What is the UK average and where does the 8.5 tCO2e figure come from?

Roughly 8.5 tCO2e/person/year is a commonly cited estimate of the average UK resident's footprint once home energy, transport, flights, diet and a share of public/government emissions are all included. Individual totals vary widely by income, housing, commute and travel habits, which is exactly what the sliders let you explore.

What does the 2050 target of about 2 tCO2e really imply?

Roughly 2 tCO2e/person/year is close to the level scientists associate with a global trajectory consistent with limiting warming to well below 2°C, once the whole world's population and total remaining carbon budget are divided out. For most people in high-income countries today, reaching it means combining lower-carbon electricity, less flying, less driving and a lower-meat diet rather than any single change on its own.
