How it works

The offshore wave height comes from a magnitude/depth scaling used for first-order tsunami estimates: bigger quakes and shallower open-ocean depth both raise the initial wave, and the tide adds directly on top.

As the wave crosses the continental shelf it shoals — the same energy is squeezed into shallower water, so the local height on screen grows even though the deep-ocean value stays fixed. A sea wall cuts run-up to 72% and a breakwater to 82%; with no defense the full run-up reaches the coast.
