With dark matter
Halo only
Keplerian r-½
How it works
- Stars orbit on near-circular paths with differential rotation: inner stars lap outer ones. A solar-system (Keplerian) curve would fall as r-½; real galaxies have a flat curve, evidence for a halo of dark matter.
- Spiral arms are a density wave, a rotating pattern that stars drift through. Switch it off and the arms become material: they wind up within a few rotations (the winding problem).
- Collision mode integrates every star as a test particle in the gravity of two massive, merging galaxies (with dynamical friction), producing bridges and long tidal tails.
