Atomic Oxygen Erosion of Spacecraft Materials

Below about 700 km, residual atomic oxygen is the dominant chemically aggressive species a spacecraft's ram-facing surfaces encounter, and it erodes exposed organics far faster than radiation or thermal cycling alone. This simulator renders a material coupon facing an animated atomic-oxygen stream, accumulates real fluence from an altitude-dependent flux model, and converts it to erosion depth via each material's measured erosion yield — Kapton pits and darkens quickly, PTFE and silicone-coated Kapton resist far longer, and bare aluminum's native oxide barely erodes at all. Live readouts track mission time, instantaneous flux, cumulative fluence, erosion depth and remaining thickness as the mission clock runs.
