How it works

Sound pressure level falls off with distance from a point source by spherical spreading, and drops again each time it crosses a partition, by that partition's transmission loss (TL):

SPL(r) = Lp0 − 20·log10(r / r0) − ΣTL

Lp0 = source level at r0 = 1 m
r   = corridor distance to the sleep pod
ΣTL = sum of transmission losses of every
      wall the sound crosses en route

Halving the distance from a machine only buys ~6 dB (the 20·log10 term), while a single foam-lined bulkhead can remove 25 dB outright — which is why real station layouts (ISS, planned lunar/Mars habitats) put crew quarters behind a dedicated partition rather than relying on distance alone, and why the article's "acoustics" and "physical separation" design principles matter as much as raw module square footage.
