How it works

A control node fires a command pulse toward a remote target. The pulse crosses the gap at light speed, so the target only "hears" the command after a delay set purely by distance — nothing can shorten it. Once the command arrives, the nanobot swarm applies its force to the target, but that force has also been attenuated on the way out: the further the target, the weaker the push that actually reaches it, following an exponential decay law.

Target distance — sets both the light-speed delay before the swarm reacts to a new command and how strongly the applied force is attenuated by the time it arrives.
Applied force — the force the swarm tries to exert on the target; only the attenuated fraction actually moves anything.
Decoherence noise — random positional jitter applied to each nanobot, standing in for the loss of quantum correlation that would scramble any entanglement-based control link over long baselines.
Swarm density — number of nanobots assembling on the target's surface; a denser swarm reaches full assembly faster for the same received force.

Real-world relevance: this delay-plus-attenuation pair is why no real spacecraft is "remote controlled" live across interplanetary distances — commands are queued and executed autonomously on board, because by the time a signal (or a comparably feeble force) arrives, the moment it was sent for has long passed.
