How it works

Each of the five monitored variables relaxes toward its current target on a first-order exponential curve — the same lag every real ECLSS sensor loop shows:

x(t) = x_target + (x0 − x_target)·e^(−t/τ)
equivalently each frame: x += (x_target − x)·(1 − e^(−dt/τ))

Nominal targets are held with a short τ (tight control loop) plus small sensor noise. Starting a drill silently swaps ONE variable's target to an off-nominal value with a longer τ, so the deviation grows in over several seconds — exactly like a real degrading fault, not an instant alarm:

CO₂ Scrubber failure — CO₂ target rises 400 → 8,000 ppm.
O₂ Generator failure — O₂ target falls 20.9% → 15.0%.
Pressure leak — cabin pressure target falls 101.3 → 60 kPa.
Coolant loop failure — loop temperature target rises 22°C → 38°C.
Humidity control failure — relative humidity target rises 45% → 85%.
Circulation fan failure — no single sensor redlines; instead CO₂ and temperature both drift moderately (stratified, poorly-mixed air) — the hardest signature to name correctly.

Higher rank shortens the time budget, shortens τ (faster, more obvious onset for Cadet vs. a slow creep for Commander) and adds more measurement noise, matching how NASA and ISS malfunction-procedure trainers escalate difficulty. The noise-multiplier and time-scale sliders let you practice above or below your rank's default difficulty without switching rank. Practice mode lets you pick a specific fault to drill its signature in isolation. Your score weights correctness and speed; five drills at ≥80% average accuracy earns certification.
