Cosmic Ray Air Shower — Ground Footprint & LDF Plot (2D)

A single ultra-high-energy cosmic ray striking the upper atmosphere sets off a cascade of billions of secondary particles that spreads into a broad footprint by the time it reaches the ground — this is the pattern a real surface detector array measures. This 2D simulator renders that footprint from directly overhead, with secondary particles landing at radii drawn from the genuine Nishimura–Kamata–Greisen (NKG) lateral distribution, and pairs it with a live log–log lateral-distribution-function plot: the theoretical density curve against what each ground station actually reads. Tune the primary energy, the shower's age past maximum, and the observatory's altitude (which sets the Molière radius), and watch the shower size and S(1000) — the exact quantity observatories like the Pierre Auger Observatory use to estimate a cosmic ray's energy — update in real time.
