How it works

A hardware spectrum-analyzer equalizer splits incoming audio into frequency bands (via a filter bank or FFT) and shows each band's energy with attack/release ballistics, plus a peak-hold cap that jumps up instantly and falls slowly. This simulator has no microphone input, so each band's raw energy instead comes from an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck-style random walk shaped by a 1/f "pink noise" envelope, weighted so low bands run hotter than highs, with an occasional shared kick pulse across the low end.

Each bar's on-screen height does not track that raw energy directly — it runs through the same attack/release envelope follower a real meter uses: fast attack lets the display jump up almost immediately on a transient, while a slower release makes it fall gradually, so the bars read as smooth motion rather than noise. The thin cap above each bar is the separate peak-hold marker: it snaps to a new maximum instantly and only creeps down after a short hold. Toggling Log Hz lays bands out by log-frequency (like a real 20 Hz–20 kHz analyzer, with more resolution at the low end) instead of even spacing.
