How it works

A gecko toe carries millions of microscopic branched setae. Dragged at a shallow angle, each hair bends over and its split tips (spatulae) come into intimate contact with the surface, so the attractive van der Waals force between molecules — no glue, no vacuum — sums across the whole contact patch into a large holding force. Peeling at a steep angle progressively lifts the tips off the surface, shrinking real contact area until adhesion collapses to zero instantly and cleanly, with nothing left behind.

Suction cup — needs an unbroken seal against the surface. It holds strongly on a smooth clean wall but a rough or dusty surface leaves microscopic gaps the rim can't seal, so the vacuum leaks away and the force reads zero regardless of peel angle.
Sticky tape — a pressure-sensitive adhesive layer. It grips well at first, but each attach/release cycle pulls contaminants onto the glue and stretches its polymer chains, so its peak force visibly decays cycle after cycle — unlike the gecko foot's setae, which don't wear down mechanically because nothing is stretched or torn.
Roughness tolerance — real gecko setae are compliant enough to conform to some surface texture, so the gecko foot still holds a respectable (reduced) force on the rough/dusty surface where the suction cup fails outright.

This is why gecko-inspired dry adhesives are attractive for climbing robots: thousands of attach/release cycles with no residue, no pump, and no dependence on a perfectly smooth, clean wall.
