Water pours from the sluice channel onto the wheel's paddles, and the falling weight imparts torque that spins the wheel. That rotation is passed through a pair of meshed gears and a shaft down into the building, turning the millstone on top of its fixed base. Where the water strikes the paddles it kicks up a burst of spray particles.
