A stratovolcano vents a turbulent column of ash that billows and widens as it rises on a rising particle system. Friction between colliding ash grains builds static charge, discharging as branching "dirty thunderstorm" lightning bolts that jitter-flash from the plume toward the ground. Molten lava glows and pulses in the crater, base pool and channels, while embers are flung outward and arc down under gravity.
