How it works

This side view models the candy tablet as a mosaic of individual sugar-crystal grains, each with its own random fracture threshold and asymmetry — closer to how a real polycrystalline tablet actually breaks than a single uniform block. Compressive stress σ = E·ε (Hooke's law) builds as you close the jaws, and stress concentrates at grains next to ones that have already cracked, exactly as real fracture mechanics predicts crack paths follow existing crack tips.

Each grain that fractures separates bound charge across its new faces because sucrose crystals are non-centrosymmetric. If that charge survives the ambient-humidity leakage and still crosses air's ~3 MV/m dielectric-breakdown field, you get a real electrostatic-discharge flash at that grain — not a scripted animation.

Jaw closing speed sets how fast strain is applied when driven by the force slider; dragging the jaw yourself instead uses your actual pointer speed as the strain rate.
Humidity bleeds charge through a surface moisture film before breakdown, so damp candy flashes less — the same mechanism as the 3D version, modeled per-grain here instead of for the whole crystal at once.
