Suspension Bridge Cables

A catenary-cabled suspension bridge with swaying deck, hanger cables, and looping traffic. The main cables hang in a curve close to a parabola because the deck applies a near-uniform load along the span, pulling the lowest point down into a deep sag while the cable rises steeply back up to the tower saddles. Vertical hanger cables tap that tension at regular intervals to transfer the deck's weight up into the main cables, which in turn carry it down to the anchor blocks at each end.
