Orb-weavers spin two kinds of silk into one net: non-sticky radial "spokes" that form a strong load-bearing skeleton (a typical web has 20-40 spokes and can be built in under an hour), and a sticky capture spiral coated in glycoprotein glue that snares prey. Weight for weight, spider silk rivals steel in tensile strength (~1.3 GPa) yet some threads can stretch up to 40% before breaking. At dawn, humid air condenses on the cooler fibers once they drop below the dew point, and surface tension (~72 mN/m) combined with the silk's slightly hydrophobic coating pulls the water into perfect beads that act as tiny lenses.
